If you’re looking for memorable day trips from Glasgow, look no further than Falkirk — home to two of Scotland’s most remarkable modern landmarks: The Falkirk Wheel and The Kelpies. We had an incredible day exploring both of these stunning engineering and artistic masterpieces, and I couldn’t wait to share our experience.
We set off from Glasgow around 3 PM, just after lunch, and returned home by 10 PM, making it a perfectly timed day trip. Our first stop was The Falkirk Wheel, which closes by 5:30 PM, so it made sense to head there first.

The Kelpies – Majestic Equine Sculptures at Helix Park
After enjoying the Wheel, we drove just 15 minutes to reach The Kelpies, located in The Helix Park. These towering horse-head sculptures stand an impressive 100 feet tall and weigh over 300 tonnes each. Created by Scottish artist Andy Scott, The Kelpies pay tribute to the heavy horses that once pulled barges along Scotland’s canals.
As the sun began to set, the sculptures seemed to glow, adding a magical ambiance to the park. We chose the paid parking area, which is right next to the sculptures — convenient and well worth it. Relaxation and Refreshments
Helix Park is well-equipped with clean toilets, coffee shops, snack bars, and souvenir shops. We took a peaceful stroll by the canal, soaked in the views, and treated ourselves to some hot coffee and ice cream. We’d also packed a few homemade snacks, which made for a lovely little picnic.
Heading Back Home
Located just off the M9 motorway, the return journey was smooth and quick — only about 30 minutes back to Glasgow. We left just after sunset, feeling fulfilled and refreshed from the day’s adventure.
