For any Harry Potter fan, or anyone who enjoys dramatic landscapes and a hint of magic, seeing the Harry Potter train in Scotland is an unforgettable experience. During a recent day trip from Glasgow, we traveled to the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct to catch a glimpse of the Jacobite Steam Train as it chugged through the Highlands, just like in the movies.
To Harry Potter Train in Scotland: The Scenic Route from Glasgow
We began our journey from Glasgow around 12 noon, choosing the scenic route that took us through Luss, Loch Lomond, and Glencoe. This drive is nothing short of breathtaking. From serene lochs and pine-covered hills to winding mountain roads, it felt like every turn offered a new postcard-worthy view.
We made a few leisurely stops to enjoy the surroundings and take photos, which stretched our travel time to just under four hours. But with views like those, we didn’t mind one bit.
Arriving at the Glenfinnan Viaduct Viewpoint
We reached the Glenfinnan Viaduct Viewpoint around 4 PM. Parking was easy and well signposted – it cost £5 for the day, with plenty of space available even at that time.
From the car park, there’s a well-maintained trail that leads you up to several vantage points overlooking the viaduct. The walk is moderate and suitable for most visitors. Once you arrive at the main viewpoint, you’re treated to the stunning sight of the iconic stone bridge stretching across the glen, with mountains rising behind it – the exact spot where the Hogwarts Express soared through in the films.
Even if the train hasn’t arrived yet, the view alone is worth the trip.
Glenfinnan Viaduct Train Times
The vintage steam engine train passes through the viewpoint four times a day: at 10:45 AM, 1:20 PM, 3:10 PM, and 6:05 PM. The train travels between Fort William and Mallaig in both directions. Altough we missed the steam engine train, but wathced few elctric trains passing through the viaduct.
