The Scottish Highlands possess a unique magic, characterised by vast open spaces, dramatic coastlines, and charming towns that encourage a slower pace of life and a deeper connection with nature. During our recent weekend trip to Highland Scotland, we experienced all of this and more. Our journey began in Glasgow, took us to the iconic Glenfinnan Viaduct, and concluded with a relaxing stay along the coast in Burghead and Lossiemouth.

Weekend Trip to Highland Scotland: The Journey Begins
Our weekend trip began at our home in Glasgow, heading towards the breathtaking Glenfinnan Viaduct. We spent a couple of hours enjoying the famous Harry Potter train earlier that afternoon. After soaking in the stunning views, we continued our adventure in the Highlands with a road trip along the scenic route past Loch Ness.
Driving along the shores of Loch Ness was a highlight in itself. The winding roads offered gorgeous views of the legendary loch and the surrounding forests. We made a few stops to take photos and admire the misty water, hoping for a glimpse of Nessie (but unfortunately, we didn’t have any luck this time!).
Weekend Trip to Highland Scotland: Evening in Inverness
We stopped in Inverness for a well-earned break in the late afternoon. This vibrant Highland city provided the perfect break during our journey. After stretching our legs with a short riverside walk, we enjoyed dinner at a cosy local Chinese restaurant – a warm and satisfying meal after a long day on the road.
We spent some quiet time exploring the town centre before setting off again. Around 9 PM, we hit the road toward the Moray coast, excited for the next chapter of our weekend escape.
Burghead: Tranquil Coastal Charm
We arrived in Burghead later that evening and instantly fell in love with its calm, coastal atmosphere. This historic village, perched on a headland, offers uninterrupted views of the Moray Firth and is steeped in ancient history dating back to the Picts.
Highlights in Burghead:
- Burghead Bay – Long sandy stretches and rolling dunes, perfect for peaceful morning strolls.
- Burghead Visitor Centre – A small but fascinating museum about the town’s past and its Burning of the Clavie fire festival.

- The Harbour – A quiet, charming spot to watch fishing boats and enjoy the sound of the sea.
- The Walk in the Wood – We walked the trail in Burghead. As a family, we enjoyed our Sunday morning in the woods and on the beach.

Burghead is a haven for anyone seeking tranquillity and a strong connection to Scotland’s coastal culture.
Weekend Trip to Highland Scotland: Exploring Lossiemouth
The next day, we took a short drive to Lossiemouth, a charming seaside town famous for its wide beaches and relaxing coastal atmosphere.
Things to Do in Lossiemouth:
- East Beach – Soft sand, surf-friendly waves, and scenic walks.
- West Beach & Covesea Lighthouse – Dramatic views, perfect for photos and a bit of sea breeze therapy.
- Lossiemouth Marina – A lively area with boats, cafes, and a relaxed weekend buzz.
We spent several hours exploring the town, enjoying ice cream, coffee, and the beautiful views before gradually heading back south.
