Sometimes, the best journeys are the ones you don’t spend weeks planning. Our Callander family trip began as a spontaneous decision on a sunny afternoon. We had no detailed itinerary, no hotel bookings, and no long checklist of places to visit. We simply wanted to get away from the city for a few hours, breathe some fresh Scottish air, and spend quality time together as a family.
Living in Bishopbriggs, we are fortunate to have some of Scotland’s most beautiful countryside within an hour’s drive. This time, we chose Callander, often referred to as the “Gateway to the Highlands.” To make the afternoon even more special, we added a short drive to Loch Lubnaig, and together they created one of the most peaceful family outings we’ve had in a long time.
If you’re looking for an easy half-day escape from Glasgow, this itinerary is hard to beat.

Why We Chose Callander for a Last-Minute Family Trip
One of the biggest advantages of Callander is its location.
It is close enough to Glasgow for a spontaneous afternoon drive but far enough to feel like you’ve escaped into the Scottish Highlands.
Unlike longer Highland journeys, there is no need to wake up early or spend hours in the car. Even leaving home around 3:00 pm gave us enough time to enjoy both Callander and Loch Lubnaig without feeling rushed.
That flexibility makes this trip perfect for families with young children.
Scenic Drive from Bishopbriggs to Callander
We left Bishopbriggs at around 3:00 pm, taking the beautiful route through Milngavie and Campsie Glen.
This drive alone is worth the journey.
The scenery gradually changes from suburban streets to rolling hills, open farmland and quiet country roads. Every few minutes another beautiful view appears, making the drive feel much shorter than it actually is.
Although the journey takes roughly 50 minutes, it never feels long because the road itself becomes part of the adventure.
Scotland has a wonderful way of slowing you down, and this drive reminds you exactly why.
Arriving in Callander
We parked at Meadows Car Park, which is probably the most convenient place for families.
From here, everything is within easy walking distance.
The riverside is just beside the car park, while Callander‘s charming main street is only a few minutes away.
Having such a central parking location meant we could simply leave the car and enjoy the afternoon on foot.
Riverside Play Area: The Kids’ Favourite Stop
The highlight of the visit for our children wasn’t a museum or famous attraction.
It was simply the river.
The wide grassy banks beside the River Teith gave them plenty of space to run, play, throw stones into the water and simply enjoy being outdoors.
Watching children create their own adventures without needing screens or organised activities is one of the joys of travelling around Scotland.
Sometimes the simplest experiences become the most memorable.

We spent quite a while here simply relaxing while the children played.
Walking Around Callander Town Centre
After enjoying the riverside, we wandered into Callander’s town centre.
The main street has a lovely welcoming atmosphere with independent cafés, bakeries, gift shops and outdoor stores.
Everything feels relaxed.
If you’re visiting earlier in the day, Mhor Bread is well worth a visit for freshly baked pastries, artisan bread and excellent coffee.
Even though we visited later in the afternoon, the town still had a lively yet peaceful atmosphere that encouraged us to slow down and enjoy the surroundings.
Loch Lubnaig: The Highlight of Our Afternoon
After spending around two hours exploring Callander, we drove approximately 10 minutes north to Loch Lubnaig.
This turned out to be the highlight of the entire trip.
As soon as we arrived, we understood why so many locals recommend stopping here.
The loch was incredibly calm.
The surrounding mountains reflected beautifully on the water.
The only sounds were birds, gentle waves and the occasional passing breeze.
It is one of those places where you naturally stop talking for a few moments just to appreciate the scenery.
The children enjoyed running along the shoreline while we simply sat and admired the peaceful surroundings.
Although Loch Lomond is more famous, Loch Lubnaig offers something different—less crowded, quieter and equally beautiful.
If you visit Callander, don’t stop there.
Drive the extra ten minutes.
You won’t regret it.

Best Time to Visit Callander
Callander is a destination that can be enjoyed throughout the year.
Spring brings colourful wildflowers and fresh greenery.
Summer offers long evenings, making late-afternoon trips like ours ideal.
Autumn transforms the surrounding hills into spectacular shades of orange, gold and red.
Winter provides peaceful landscapes with the possibility of snow-covered mountains nearby.
Every season offers a different experience, which is why Callander is somewhere you can visit again and again.
